Guaiacwood Oil

For centuries, Native Americans have incorporated Guaiacwood into their meditation rituals and wellness ceremonies. This remarkable essential oil, derived through steam distillation from the heartwood of the Bulnesia sarmientoi tree, carries a grounding, earthy fragrance with subtle sweet undertones. It is a popular choice in the worlds of perfumery and skincare, valued for its unique scent profile.

Our doTERRA CPTG® Guaiacwood essential oil is sourced from Paraguay with a strong commitment to sustainability and ethical practices. By collaborating with our sourcing partner, we are actively shaping the future of the Gran Chaco Forest, a region recognized for its incredible biological diversity and one that is currently at risk.

Each bottle of doTERRA CPTG® Guaiacwood essential oil contains 15 mL of this precious aromatic substance, allowing you to experience its calming and tranquil woody aroma both topically and aromatically.

Process
The Gran Chaco Forest in Paraguay is the second largest forest in Latin America and among the most rapidly deforested areas in the world. Currently, more than 1,000 kilograms of Guaiacwood essential oil is produced and exported from El Chaco each year, primarily for the fragrance and perfume industries. Although Paraguay has officially established regulations and policies to protect El Chaco from deforestation, enforcement is lacking. doTERRA carefully chose a Guaiacwood sourcing partner who was committed to protecting El Chaco. Our partner is currently the only company in the area that has received the highest levels of certification from the Union for Ethical Biotrade (UEBT). Our partner has spent many years developing a first-of-its-kind ethical and sustainable Guaiacwood sourcing operation, and we are eager to support their efforts.
People
Guaiacwood harvesting can last days, or even weeks, at a time, requiring harvesters to live on site in extremely remote areas of the El Chaco Forest. Prior to our sourcing partner’s involvement in the area, these harvesters had little access to food, drank unclean water, and had no access to proper shelter while on site. To help support the harvesters’ health and ensure safety, our sourcing partner built them climate-controlled living quarters from reclaimed shipping containers that include refrigeration, rain-water collection systems, and washing machines. Our partners also increased harvesters’ pay to accommodate travel costs and began providing safety best-practices training. Eight hours away by car, in the community where the Guaiacwood distillation facility stands, nonprofit organization Fundacion Paraguaya has established the El Cerrito agricultural school. This boarding school helps local teenagers develop trade and agricultural product development skills. Both our sourcing partner and doTERRA Healing Hands have committed to financially support this school to help promote self-reliance in the area.
Planet
We believe the best way to protect a forest is to make it productive. By sourcing and selling Guaiacwood essential oil, doTERRA is making Paraguay's El Chaco Forest profitable, protecting the trees from being cut down to make space for other money-generating businesses such as cattle grazing. The unusual soil and climate combination in El Chaco has created unique biodiversity, meaning it’s the only place in the world where Guaiacwood trees can grow. Because Guaiacwood is an endangered species, our sourcing partner has been working diligently since 2018 to develop a sustainable forest management plan for it. By 2022, they had purchased more than 12,000 acres in El Chaco and divided each into 20 subplots. Only one plot per acre is harvested for essential oil each year, allowing it to then rest for 20 years before being revisited. This careful coppicing is helping El Chaco remain vibrant, productive, and protected from deforestation.
